Nelson Mandela promised that he will provide “a better life for those who had suffered under apartheid” (“The Film”). However, in reality, slums are destroyed and people have to move. Because of that, a new social movement came into being who challenged these evictions. In 2012, a documentary called Dear Mandela hit the US cinemas (world premiere: July 2011 in Durban), which wants to portray the situation of the first post-apartheid generation. Have a look at the following summary from the film makers’ website:
When their shantytowns are threatened with mass eviction, three ‘young lions’ of South Africa’s new generation rise from the shacks and take their government to the highest court in the land, putting the promises of democracy to the test. (“Dear Mandela”)
